RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Junior John Mikuzis did it again on offense and the defense followed suit and tightened down the stretch for the 11th-ranked LMU men's water polo team, lifting the Lions to an 8-7 comeback win over Cal Baptist in the regular season finale on Thursday night.
Mikuzis, who scored the game winner two weeks ago at UC Davis in the final seconds, scored with 4:07 to play to snap a 7-7 tie, lifting LMU to the road win in the final game prior to the WWPA Championships on Nov. 16-18. The Lions improve to 15-9 on the season.
The Lions trailed 6-5 entering the final quarter. Senior Jon Colton evened the game up in a hurry, scoring on the first possession of the fourth quarter to tie it at 6-6. But the Lancers answered right back, scoring with 6:56 to play to take the 7-6 lead.
The back-and-forth play continued, as the Lions drew an exclusion and then Mark Menis answered, scoring at the six minute mark to tie the game up at 7-7, setting up Mikuzis winner. The Lions fought off a 6-on-5 in the final three minutes to secure the win.
Kyle Testman had 10 saves, three coming in the final quarter. Freshman Seth Coldren led the Lions with two goals.
