LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 10th-ranked LMU men's water polo team fell to No. 8 Long Beach State, 14-11, in wild, back-and-forth game that saw the teams erupt for nine goals in the fourth quarter at the Burns Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
It was the final game of the regular season for the Lions (15-7), who will begin play in the 2011 Western Water Polo Association Championships next weekend in La Jolla.
Dan Matulis, Nick Rascon and Devin Mefford had three goals each to lead Long Beach State (16-9).
It was back-and-forth from the start as the 49ers built a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. Both teams would score a pair of goals in the second as the 49ers led 5-4 at the break.
The teams continued to trade goals as Colton's extra-man goal cut the 49er lead to just one, 7-6. However, Long Beach State gained some distance on the Lions with back-to-back goals in the final minute of the third quarter to go up 9-7 after three.
The teams then combined to score nine goals in the fourth as the 49ers start the quarter with back-to-back goals to gain a four-goal lead. The Lions would not get closer than three the final minutes.
