LA JOLLA, Calif. – After falling behind early in the first quarter Friday, Loyola Marymount was unable to mount a comeback in their opening game of the Western Water Polo Association Tournament. Cal Baptist (21-12, 4-3 WWPA) jumped ahead 4-0, and won 15-9, despite LMU (7-9, 2-5 WWPA) outscoring the Lancers in the second half.

Newly named Second Team All-WWPA performer Matt Braun put the Lions on the board in the first quarter after CBU scored the game’s opening four goals. LMU scored a second goal just before the end of the period, with Joseph Shaw making it a 5-2 game after one.

After Cal Baptist built their lead back up, Austin Clark added his first goal for the Lions, making the score 7-3. Braun added his second of the half as LMU carried an 11-4 into the break.

Shaw opened the second half with his second goal of the day and WWPA All-Freshman selection Alessio Brunochelli scored his first as LMU won the period 2-1.

The two teams each scored a trio of goals in the final quarter. LMU’s three came from Brunochelli and Clark, and the final goal by senior Neil LeVecke.

The Lions return to Canyonville Aquatic Center Saturday at 11 a.m. to face seventh-seeded Santa Clara. This will open the quartet of Saturday games with games following at 12:45 p.m., 4 p.m., and 5:45 p.m.
