Strong Finish in Third Place Win
Men’s water polo scores final three goals of the game to earn 11-9 win over No. 15 California Baptist.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 16th-ranked LMU men’s water polo team wrapped up the 2016 season with a strong finish, scoring the final three goals of the game to earn an 11-9 win over No. 15 California Baptist in the third place game of the Western Water Polo Association Championships.
California Baptist’s took a 9-8 lead with 3:05 to play in the third quarter thanks to a Caleb Rogers goal. From there the Lions’ defense took over and kept the Lancers (21-11) off the scoreboard the final 11 minutes of the game.
In response, the Lions (13-16) got the offense they needed.
Cory McGee tied the game wiht 1:54 to play in the third frame. Freshman Alex Athimaritis then did the rest, scoring with 2:38 to play in the game to make it 10-9 and then tallying an insurance goal with 34 seconds left for the final margin.
Athimaritis led the Lions with four goals, two assists and two steals. Jon Beck and Dayne Jagga added two goals each while Daniel Arellano added two more assists to his season-record. He finishes his sophomore campaign with an LMU record 72 assists.
