Semifinal #2 Postgame Quotes
Dec. 7, 2002
California Postgame QuotesSaturday, Dec. 7, 20 02 * Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Semifinal #2: UC Berkeley vs. Queens College
Head Coach Kirk Everist On Queens' play: "In general, I thought it was a hard match. We didn't know a whole lot about their team and so for the last 4 or 5 days, we scrambled to put some things together. They are a mostly international team and so they have a lot of experience. They work well together. They're a team that runs a lot of picks and dry passes to the 2M. But we were able to get in a rhythm toward the end of the 2nd." On facing Stanford: "I think regardless of who it is, the kids are just here to play for a national championship. We're familiar with Stanford, not only because we face them during the season, but also because we train with them and compete against them in the summer months. We know each other's moves and what we like to do. When you talk about Stanford, the first thing you come up with is Tony Azevedo. He's someone you've got to handle, but you're never going to stop him, so we need to look at taking other players out of the game. Our strengths have always been our pressure defense, our laning defense, and our counter attacks. We're more of a transitional, mobile team. We try to get goals out of our active offense and create opportunities."
Junior Attila Banhidy On the end of the 2nd quarter run: "Queens never really dropped back on defense as we expected. They pressed more, and we started driving which was more successful and led to two of my goals."
Queens Postgame QuotesSaturday, Dec. 7, 2002 - Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Semifinal #2: Cal Berkeley vs. Queens
Head Coach Derek Ellington
On Today's Game: "Today's game was about what we expected in terms of speed and intensity. The other team did a good job pressing. We did some things well, and we fell down on others. When you have only ten field players, you pray and hope that things go well, and sometimes they don't."
On Cal Berkeley and Differences In The Style of Play: "Cal has had the opportunity all year to play at that level of intensity. We come from a different style of game -- not as much pressing, not as much performance pressure every second. It's an eye-opener when you come here. All of the players can do everything asked of them. That's the real difference. The East coast is getting close in style, but we still need the bodies and a few other things to take the last steps that will help us win games like this. Every time we play, we learn something new."
Michel Vieira On Cal State San Diego: "They played a very good game today. That's one more hard game we have ahead of us tomorrow."
Caner Erdogru On Playing In the Finals: "When we came to the finals expecting to win the first game. We didn't go in there expecting to lose." On Queen's Strengths and Weaknesses: "We did a great job in the first quarter, but we fell apart in the second quarter. If we could have kept up in the second quarter, I don't know if we would have won, but the game would at least have been much closer." On Tomorrow's Game: "It will be the same style of game tomorrow -- the team with the most endurance will get the game." |
