Los Angeles, CA (Aug. 5) - The first day of the USA Water Polo National Championships at Loyola Marymount University was a busy one, as 12 games took place on the LMU campus. The 16-team event sponsored by S & S Hardware Company, Inc., will continue group play on Friday with 12 more games at Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center. In the event, the host Lions split its pair of games, defeating New York Athletic Club B 5-4 and falling to the Bruin club 8-1. The Lions will play its final game in Group A when they take on the Olympic Club team. Opening day saw some teams get two games deep into their group, and others one game. Friday's competition will round out group play and determine which teams work their ways into the winner's bracket for a place in the top eight. Group A and Group D teams all played two games on Thursday, with Bruin, Newport and Lamorinda each pinning up a pair of wins. Lamorinda and Newport's noon showdown on Friday will likely determine the first-place finisher in Group D. Group B and Group C teams have two games to go in group action -- all to take place Friday starting at 7 a.m. at LMU.
