LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU men's water polo earned their fourth straight Western Water Polo Association Championship in 2010. Despite having to reload their roster to replace seven graduating seniors, the Lions debut the 2011 season ranked eighth in the preseason national coaches' poll.
The Lions completed a record run in 2010 with seven seniors, five of which became the first student-athletes in LMU history to claim a title all four years as a Lion within a male program. The Lions have eight titles the last 10 years and finished one point ahead of school rival Pepperdine, who sits in ninth.
"We will ask returning players to step into new roles of leadership and will ask younger players to become more active in their role," said Head Coach John Loughran, who enters his 15th season at LMU. "We still have experience on our roster and they understand our goals and what it takes to achieve those goals."
WWPA rival UC San Diego debuts at No. 12, followed by No. 13 UC Davis and No. 14 Santa Clara. The WWPA added No. 18 Air Force in the top-20, while Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer are in the poll as receiving votes.
The Lions will see three of those ranked conference foes in the first weekend of action. The Lions will begin the season at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational when they face Redlands and Cal Lutheran on Saturday, followed by Air Force and UC San Diego on Sunday.
The Lions will then play their home opener on Sept. 10 against Pepperdine at 12 noon. The game is the Lions' Centennial Game as the University celebrates LMUat100. Special promotions and limit edition giveaways will be part of the celebration. Each of the Lions teams will host a Centennial Game. For the complete schedule, visit the LMUat100 Homepage.
