Lions Picked to Re-take Title
Men's water polo edges out UC San Diego as the coaches' pick to win WWPA in 2012.

LOS ANGELES -- LMU men's water polo has been picked to win the 2012 Western Water Polo Association championship after earning the top spot of the 2012 WWPA Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Lions earned 116 points to edge out UC San Diego as the upcoming season gets started this Labor Day weekend.
The Lions earn seven first place votes to UC San Diego's five in the annual coaches' poll (coaches cannot vote for their own team). UC Davis, who played in last year's title game, earned 100 points to place third while Air Force earned 91 points to earn fourth.
Shaping up the next four spots in the the poll was Santa Clara (84 points) at No. 5, Pomona-Pitzer (69) at No. 6, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (58) at No. 7, and Redlands (56) at No. 8. Rounding out the poll was Whitter, Chapman, La Verne and Occidental.
The Lions return six seniors who have won a pair of WWPA titles, led by team captain and 2011 NCAA Division I All-American Jon Colton. All-WWPA honorable mention selection and WWPA All-Tournament first-team selection Kyle Testman also returns in goal for the Lions.
The Lions also return 2011 WWPA Newcomer of the Year Joe Ferretti, who is the team's top returning scorer with 41 goals a year ago. He was also a second-team All-WWPA selection in his first season of collegiate water polo.

LMU will begin the year on Saturday when they travel to Whittier to take on the Poets at 9 a.m. They will then return to the Burns Aquatics Center to host the annual Alumni Game at 2 p.m.
