Home WWPA Games Dominate 2013 Schedule
Men's water polo to play four conference games at home in another loaded schedule.
Aug 28, 2013
LOS ANGELES -- With a roster that features just a pair of seniors, the young 2013 LMU men's water polo team will have a chance to learn against the best right out of the gates, facing three teams that finished in the top-five nationally a year ago in the first weekend of play of the new season.
The Lions announced its 2013 schedule, and with it comes four of the five games within the Western Water Polo Association at home. The Lions will welcome to the Burns Aquatics Center defending WWPA champion Air Force (Sunday, Oct. 27), UC Davis (Nov. 1), Santa Clara (Nov. 3) and WWPA newcomer Cal Baptist (Nov. 9).
The only road conference game might be the toughest, facing conference rival UC San Diego on Sept. 25.
"For us to get ready for the conference season we have some very good competition in some early season tournaments," said Head Coach John Loughran, who enters his 17th season with the Lions. "Our job is to get a good seed for the conference tournament and to enter the end of the season playing out best water polo. This program is known for doing that and our schedule is set-up to help us with that."
One of those early season tournaments is on the first weekend of the season when the Lions travel to UC San Diego for the Triton Invitational. The Lions will open with Cal Lutheran (Sept. 7), and then will face defending national champion USC (Sept. 7) followed by Cal and Long Beach State (Sept. 7), who finished, third and fifth in the final national poll in 2012.
"First weekend we play Cal and USC, and then Long Beach State," said Loughran. "It is going to give our guys experience right away. We can get better by playing better teams, and we are excited for it."
Following the Triton Invite, the Lions come to Burns for the home opener against Pepperdine in the first Wells Fargo PCH Cup battle of the season (Sept. 14). The Lions will then head to the NorCal Tournament in Berkeley (Sept. 21-22) and then the date with the Tritons in La Jolla.
LMU will then return home to face UCLA at Burns on Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. This season LMU men's water polo games will be free to the public. For the date with the Bruins, the game will be sponsored by the Lions' Athletic Fund, and tickets will be charged for the contest. Half of the ticket revenue for the game will go toward the men's water polo Lions' Athletic Fund, which helps support scholarships for their student-athletes.
The Lions will then travel to the Troyer Invitational (Oct. 4-5) hosted by Pomona-Pitzer and then the SoCal Tournament (Oct. 12-13) hosted by UC Irvine. The road swing will end with a trip to USC when the face the Trojans on OCt. 19.
The Lions will then play the four-straight WWPA games at home and will end the regular season with Long Beach State at home on Nov. 14.
The 2013 WWPA Championships will be held at UC Davis Nov. 22-24.
