LOS ANGELES -- Junior John Mikuzis has been named the KAP7 Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week for Oct. 3 after leading the Lions to a ninth-place finish at the 2012 SoCal Tournament last weekend. The Lions jumped one spot in the latest national poll, moving to a ranking of No. 9 in the nation.
The Lions went on to defeat No. 9 Long Beach State, 13-10, in the ninth place game, to finish the weekend at 3-1. Mikuis led the Lions to three straight wins, scoring nine of his 11 goals in that stretch. He would finish the week as a stat-stuffer, scoring 11 goals with four assists, 14 kickouts drawn, four steals and four field blocks. The Lions earned a pair of WWPA wins to improve to 5-1 against conference foes and 7-6 overall.
Mikuzis is now second on the team this season with 23 goals, two shy of his career high from a year ago. He has added three assists, 24 kickouts drawn, six steals and six field blocks.
The Lions will play in the Gary Troyer Claremont Convergence over the weekend, starting with host Claremont at 1:40 p.m., Friday.
