Nov. 12, 2012
LOS ANGELES -- Seedings for the 2012 Western Water Polo Association Men's Championships are all set and 11th-ranked LMU has been seeded second and will open the tournament on Friday at 12:30 p.m., against seventh-seed Pomona-Pitzer.
The Lions finished the regular season with an 8-7 win over Cal Baptist and improved to 15-9 on the season. They enter the WWPA Championships at 10-2 against the WWPA. The Lions defeated Pomona-Pitzer at the Burns Aquatics Center 13-7 on Sept. 22 in their only meeting.
UC San Diego has claimed the top-seed thanks to hot a finish to the regular season, winning its last five and seven of eight. The Championships begin at Whittier's Slade Aquatic Center on Friday, Nov. 16 and run through Sunday, Nov. 18 with the title game set for 2:15 pm on Sunday.
The Tritons enter the tournament at 14-7 overall and 12-2 against WWPA foes. During their end of the season winning streak, UCSD defeated six of the seven remaining teams in the field. Included in that was a win over the Lions. The two rivals split four games on the season in a series that continues to build the rivalry between the two WWPA powers. The Lions held just a two-goal edge in the combined score on the season.
Taking home the No. 3 seed was Air Force, who at 16-10 is having one of its best seasons. They are 9-4 against the WWPA and will open tournament play against No. 6 seed Claremont at 2:15 p.m. The Staggs recently won the SCIAC Championships and are on a roll themselves, winning five of their last six to enter the tournament 13-16 overall and 8-6 against the WWPA.
The four-five game will feature a rematch of a game played last Saturday as No. 4 UC Davis will take on No. 5 Santa Clara. They will play at 10:45 a.m. In their meeting on Nov. 11, UC Davis earned a 13-11 win to enter the tournament at 13-16 overall and 11-5 in the WWPA. Santa Clara is 9-18 on the season and 6-9 in conference.
Rounding out the seeding is No. 7 seed Pomona-Pitzer, who is 14-15 overall and 8-6 in conference. They will face No. 2 LMU at 12:30 p.m. Host Whittier claimed the No. 8 seed. They are 11-17 overall and 6-10 in the WWPA and will face UC San Diego to start the tournament at 9 am.
