LOS ANGELES -- For the second straight year and the fourth time since 2007, an LMU men's water polo player has earned Western Water Polo Association Newcomer of the Year. This year it belongs to freshman Milutin Mitrovic, the Lions leading scorer in 2012 who is one of four to claim postseason honors by the WWPA announced on Wednesday.
Mitrovic also joins Ian Elliott and Andy Stevens as the only Lions to earn first-team All-Conference in their freshman season. Joining Mitrovic on the the 2012 WWPA First-Team are John Mikuzis and goalie Kyle Testman. Earning honorable mention honors is senior Collin Walters. Mitrovic also added WWPA All-Freshman honors.
The Lions have had at least four members on the All-Conference teams every year since 1999 and this year's team is just the second to have three first-team selections.
Mitrovic leads the Lions with 62 goals in his first season of college water polo, adding 21 assists and 18 steals. The goal total is the most since Endre Rex-Kiss had 72 in 2005 and is the most by a freshman in program history.
As for Mikuzis, he became the Lions go to player on the season, scoring a pair of game winners in the final month and becoming a Player of the Year candidate in the WWPA. He is second on the team with 35 goals, anchoring the Lions' offense at two-meter.
Anchoring the Lions defense all season has been Testman. Earning Honorable Mention honors a year ago, the senior played every game and all but four minutes on the season. He enters the WWPA tournament on Friday with 245 saves, 11th all-time in LMU history.
Another senior earning postseason honors was Walters. Having the best season of his career, Walters did a little of everything for the Lions. He leads the team in assists with 27, ranks third in steals with 23 and has added 26 goals while playing all 24 games.
The Lions begin play in the 2012 WWPA Championships on Friday, taking on Pomona-Pitzer as the No. 2 seed at 12:30 p.m. Follow the championships at WWPA Championship Central.
