DAVIS, Calif. – The 2017 Western Water Polo Association announced its season awards on Wednesday, with Loyola Marymount’s Matt Braun and Alessio Brunochelli receiving recognition. Following strong seasons with the Lions, Braun has been named to the All-Conference Second Team and Brunochelli is an All-Freshman Team Honoree.
Braun led LMU with with 42 goals, 51 points, 32 steals, and 28 winning sprints. The sophomore also added nine assists on the year. Braun scored five goals against Iona this year, and finished the regular season with four four-goal games and a pair of three-goal games. Ranking among the conference’s best in several statistical categories, Braun’s goals, steals, and sprint winning percentage were all in the top-10 of the WWPA.
In his first season competing, Brunochelli finished second on the team with 31 goals. His 41 points were third-most on LMU, and he added 10 assists and 17 steals on the year. Brunochelli finished the year with multi-goal games in five of his last six, all starting with a four-goal performance against San Jose State.
LMU’s season continues this weekend at the WWPA Championships in La Jolla, Calif. The Lions open the conference tournament Friday at 4 p.m. against Cal Baptist. Live stats will be available through TheFOSH and live video through UCSDTritons.TV.
