Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 19, 2008) - Loyola Marymount went 8-0 in conference play to earn the top seed in Friday's Western Water Polo Association Championships. They also swept the individual honors in the WWPA's annual end of the season awards voted on by the coaches. Loyola Marymount sophomore goalie Andy Stevens has been named the WWPA Men's Water Polo Player of the Year while true freshman Edgaras Asajavicius has been named Newcomer of the Year.

LMU's John Loughran has been named WWPA Coach of the Year. It is Loughran's fourth WWPA Coach of the Year honor on the men's side (2001, 2003, 2005, 2008). All told 30 student-athletes were honored for their performance in the pool this 2008 season.

Stevens finished the regular season ranked seventh in the nation with 244 saves. The save total ranked second in the WWPA while his saves per game average of 10.57 was tops in the league. He played in all 26 games for the Lions helping them to the No. 1 seed in the upcoming WWPA Men's Water Polo Championship hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, Nov. 21 - Sunday, Nov. 23.

As for the freshman Asajavicius, he led LMU with 45 goals in his first season of collegiate water polo. He finished the season with four goals against 10th-ranked Long Beach State, his 20th multiple goal game of the season.

In addition to the Player of the Year honor for Stevens, he also earned first-team All-WWPA honors. Joining him on the first team is teammate and senior Tim Hummel, senior Andrew Becskehazy of Redlands, seniors Adi Jerkovich and A.J. Kotanjian of UC San Diego, senior Grant Muenter of UC Davis, and junior Jack Wall of Santa Clara.

 

 

Second-team All-WWPA honors went to senior Adam Bennett of UC Davis, sophomore Tibor Forai of LMU, junior Daniel Garcia of UC San Diego, sophomore Ben Hadley of Pomona-Pitzer, junior Jack Hines of Air Force, junior Brendan Meaney of Redlands, and junior goalie Casey Regehr of Whittier.

Earning All-Freshman honors in the WWPA was Asajavicius of LMU, James Case of Santa Clara, Luke Collins of UC Davis, Tyler Harp of Redlands, Alex Hernandez of Whittier, Jaron Moler of Pomona-Pitzer, goalie David Morton of UC San Diego and Vincent Schiavoni of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
