Jevay Grooms recently completed her fourth season with the Lions...is playing her best basketball as she enters her senior year... a team leader... has a very good work ethic...has a strong desire to improve her basketball knowledge...is very athletic...possesses the type of skills and abilities that makes basketball players successful... looks to make another big offensive improvement.
Senior center started 15 games for the Lions... finished her career with a .522 field goal percentage, the highest all-time in school history... shot 53.9% from the field this season, tying herself for third on the single season charts...scored in double digits in the first two games of the season, scoring 12 against Arizona and adding 15 against UC Irvine...also had seven rebounds against the Anteaters... went to the free throw line a career-high eight times against UCI...recorded three blocks in the LMU Ayres Hotel Thanksgiving Tournament... was almost perfect from the field against UCSB, going 5-for-6 with 11 points and four rebounds... combined for 17 points and 12 rebounds in two games at the Blue Sky Classic... had five offensive rebounds against Portland...scored nine points against Pepperdine in the final game of her career... finished her career with 44 blocks, 10th on the career blocks chart... an excellent student, Grooms earned a Presidential Citation, the McKay Award and was named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.
Had a breakout junior season, playing in all 29 games and starting 25... averaged 7.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game... her 53.9 field goal percentage was the third best in LMU single season history... it led the team and was second in the WCC... her first career start was record-breaking, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds against Colorado in the season-opener (11/19/04)... shot 10-for-11 from the field, and her 90.9 shooting percentage was the 4th best shooting percentage in an LMU single game... also had two assists, two blocks and a steal against the Buffalos... followed it up with another double-digit rebounding game, grabbing 12 boards and scoring eight points against Cal State Fullerton (11/20/04) to earn Nugget Classic All-Tournament honors... recorded another double-double against UC Santa Barbara (1/2/05), scoring 10 points and grabbing 15 rebounds... had several key offensive rebounds in the final minutes of the one-point LMU victory... scored 18 points on 8-for-9 shooting from the field at Saint Mary's (1/22/05)... that 88.9 FG percentage ranks 6th on the LMU single game list... played in double-digit minutes in all but two games... averaged 23.0 minutes of play... led the team with 22 blocks, including six games with at least two blocks... named to the WCC All-Academic Team.
Appeared in 21 games for the Lions... averaged 1.6 points per game and 1.4 rebounds per game... registered a career-high 13 points against Santa Clara (1/17/04) while playing a career-high 22 minutes... played 12 minutes against San Francisco (2/26/04) and scored four points... grabbed a career-high five rebounds twice (1/17/04 against Santa Clara, 2/26/04 against San Francisco).
Played in 13 games...scored a season-high four points against Portland (1/10/03) ...also scored against Arkansas (12/30/02), Gonzaga (1/11/03) and Saint Mary's (1/31/03)...collected her first collegiate block at Saint Mary's (3/1/03)...also had season-high four rebounds in the game against Gonzaga.
Grooms is a 2002 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Granada, CA...a three sport athlete... lettered four times in track, three times in volleyball and basketball... was a four-time All-Mission Valley League selection in volleyball...captained her junior and senior volleyball squads...named all-league in basketball as a freshman, sophomore and junior...was basketball captain in 2000 and 2001.
Jevay Talia Grooms was born on June 25, 1984 in Glendale, CA...the daughter of Henry and Tonie Grooms...has seven brothers, Zanye, Ian, Ivan, Athesis, Yaphet, Rahsan, Dax and four sisters, Xava, Shaneya, Nina and Cathy...loves food and traveling...a political science and economics double major with an international emphasis.
