Played and started in all 29 games…began the season hitting a career-high 13 points against UC Riverside (11/25/02)…nearly matched it twice scoring 12 points against Portland (2/8/03) and Saint Mary’s (3/1/03)…drained four 3-pointers also against Portland…collected eight rebounds against South Alabama (11/29/02), a new career record… dished out a season-high seven assists against Portland (1/10/03) and San Francisco (2/1/03).
Played in 28 games and made 16 starts…scored a season-high 10 points against Long Beach State (12/6/01)…drained three 3-pointers at Gonzaga (1/19/02); one of which was a dramatic buzzer beater to win the game in overtime…was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe against Pepperdine (1/30/02)…finished the year averaging 3.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
Stepped into a starting role for first six games due to an injury to teammate Rosa Bernasconi…the rookie performed well as a starter scoring nine points in the season opener against San Diego State (11/21/00)…missed seven games mid-season after suffering a broken hand…came back from her injury to be a starter for six of the final seven games after Bernasconi was again struck by the injury bug (torn ACL)…matched her season-high nine points against San Diego (2/10/01)…collected a personal-best three steals against Portland (2/1/01)…hit a season-best three three-pointers against San Diego State.
Self is a 2000 graduate of Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu, HI…a two-sport athlete, earned two varsity letters in cross country and three in basketball…captained both teams as a senior…led junior and senior squads to state championships…a three-time all-city and all-state pick…garnered All-ILH (Interscholastic League of Honolulu) honors three times…sophomore team was the Las Vegas Nike Summer Classic Champions…was named MVP of that tournament…garnered USA Today All-American honorable mention honors following her sophomore campaign…prep basketball coach was Clay Cockett.
Raelen Sheena Kawaikapuokalani Self was born on June 4, 1982 in Honolulu, HI…the daughter of Raoul and Deidre Self…she has one sister, Drae Ann…also recruited by the Naval Academy and the University of Long Island…chose LMU because of the basketball program and for the excellent science department…enjoys crafting, specifically etching glass, in her spare time…lists Hawai’i as her favorite vacation spot…a natural science major with aspirations to one day become a surgeon.
