MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine guard Paige Fecske posted a career-high 37 points as the Waves (9-9, 5-9 WCC) defeated Loyola Marymount (15-9, 8-6 WCC) 85-74 on Saturday afternoon to take the PCH Cup. This was a close one throughout, as the game saw 21 lead changes and 14 ties. Raychel Stanley of LMU secured a career-high of her own, finishing with 28 points and 10 boards, giving her a double-double on the day.
LMU started out the game on a 6-0 run behind a layup from Stanley and back-to-back baskets from Gabby Green, but Pepperdine battled back to keep things close for the remainder of the quarter, and the two teams were tied at 16-16 after one.
Things remained tight in the second, as the teams traded baskets throughout the quarter, but a Cheyanne Wallace nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to give LMU a 36-34 lead at the half. Green continued her strong play in quarter two, racking up 11 points and five boards at the midway point.
Fecske went off in the third quarter, scoring nine of her career-high 37 points in the frame as Pepperdine edged LMU 23-21 to tie it up at 79-79 heading into the fourth. LMU shot 17 free throws in the third quarter alone, netting 11 of them to stay in it. The Lions were held without a field goal for over five minutes in the frame before Cierra Belvin put in a layup in the last minute of the period.
LMU continued to draw contact and get to the line in the fourth, but they could not stop Pepperdine’s hot streak sparked by Fecske. The game remained close for most of the fourth but the Waves pushed their lead to double-digits in the closing minutes and ended up securing the 11-point victory.
Before fouling out in the fourth, Green added 13 points and nine rebounds for LMU.
The Lions shot a season-high 44 free throws in today’s loss, going 28-of-44 from the line overall.
Pepperdine and LMU split the 2017-18 regular season series. Five Lions posted double-figure scoring in the first matchup against the Waves at home on Jan. 25, which resulted in a 75-60 LMU victory. Cheyanne Wallace and Raychel Stanley led the Lions in scoring on the night with 13 points apiece. Wallace also racked up nine boards, six assists, four blocks and two steals. Gabby Green posted 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, Bree Alford tallied 10 points and seven boards and Andee Velasco poured in 11 points.
LMU has three consecutive home games following today’s game, hosting the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m., the San Francisco Dons on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. and the Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
