Women's Basketball Begins With 49-Point Exhibition Victory

LOS ANGELES - The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team earned a 87-38 victory over the Occidental Tigers in an exhibition matchup on Tuesday night at Gersten Pavilion. LMU started out the game on an 11-0 run and never trailed in the contest. The team held a commanding 41-18 lead at the half.

Six Lions finished with double-figure scoring in the win.

Junior Cheyanne Wallace led all scorers with 15 points on 60.0 percent (6-of-10) shooting on the night to go along with a game-high four blocks and two steals. Redshirt junior Bree Alford registered a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in addition to a game-high-tying four steals. Sophomore Cierra Belvin was the game’s assists leader, dishing out seven dimes and adding 10 points with a game-high-tying four steals.

Redshirt junior NK Ilang tallied 12 points, including eight in the third quarter alone, in addition to eight boards and a game-high-tying four steals.

Redshirt junior Josie Buckingham finished with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting in her first game for LMU after sitting out the 2016-17 season following her transfer from Minnesota. Redshirt junior Gabby Green also sat the 2016-17 season after transferring from Cal and played her first game for the Lions tonight, finishing with six points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Freshman Jasmine Jones rounded out the Lions in double figures as she recorded 10 points, seven boards, five assists and three steals in her LMU debut.

 

 

Alyssa Ramlochan paced the Occidental, finishing with 10 points.

The Lions outrebounded the Tigers 50 to 27 and dished out 25 team assists to Occidental’s nine. LMU also snagged 24 steals on the night.

LMU opens the 2017-18 regular season at UC Riverside on Friday, Nov. 10 and plays two more road games at Saint Louis on Nov. 13 and Long Beach State on Nov. 17 before the team’s home opener at Gersten Pavilion on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. vs. the Arizona Wildcats.
