LOS ANGELES - The LMU women's basketball team got a big monkey off its back Saturday, cinching its first win of the season, a 57-54 final over Wyoming in the Consolation Game of the 2011 DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Thanksgiving Classic.
Trailing 54-48 with seven minutes remaining, the Lions scored the final eight points of the game, including a game-tying runner by Hazel Ramirez with one minute on the clock, to snap a season-opening five-game losing streak.
After Ramirez knotted the score at 54, Emily Ben-Jumbo corralled a huge rebound off a three-point attempt by the Cowgirls' Kayla Woodward, giving LMU possession with 44 seconds on the clock.
Cowling then went to work as the shot clock wound down, powering her way down the left block, and converted a layup while being fouled. She completed the old-fashion three-point play to give the Lions the three-point lead.
Wyoming had one final look, but Kaitlyn Mileto's jumper came up short and Courtney Collishaw collected the rebound, securing the win.
The Lions never trailed in the first half, able to take a 29-25 lead into the locker room. After the Cowgirls scored the first basket of the game, LMU ran off a quick 7-0 run on a pair of layups by Alex Cowling and a three-point basket by Monica DeAngelis.
Another three by DeAngelis and a jumper by Alexis Love stretched the lead to 14-6 at the 13:33 mark, the largest spread of the half. A layup by Wyoming's Brenna Freeze 8:14 remaining cut LMU's lead to just one, 17-16, but Cowling responded with a layup of her own.
The Cowgirls kept it close for the remainder of the half, and tied the game 25-25 on a three-point basket by Mileto with 53 seconds remaining. But Collishaw converted a fastbreak layup and the and-one free throw in the final seconds giving LMU a four-point advantage, and the momentum, at the break.
Cowling finished with her second straight double-double, leading the Lions with 17 points and 11 boards. Ramirez chipped in 11 points and three assists.
Woodward led Wyoming (1-4) with 17 points while Ashley Sickles scored 11 and Mileto had eight.
LMU opens December on the road, taking on New Mexico in The Pit on Thursday, Dec. 1. The Lions open a seven-game home stand on Dec. 4 against UCLA.
