LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team (7-0) picked up its seventh straight win to start the season, defeating the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (4-4) 84-52 on Tuesday night at Gersten Pavilion. The last time the Lion women began a season 7-0 was when the team won its first eight contests to start the 2003-04 campaign.

The Lions were aggressive from the start as they outrebounded the Toros 18-9 in the first quarter while outscoring Cal State Dominguez Hills 22-10 in the frame. Bree Alford pulled down six of her game-high 11 rebounds in the first to set the tone on the boards.

LMU continued its dominance in the second quarter as Josie Buckingham came off the Lion bench to pour in eight points and grab four rebounds in the period, helping LMU take a commanding 49-26 lead at the half. Five Lions scored 5+ points in the opening half (Alford, Jasmine Jones, Buckingham, Makenzie Cast, Cheyanne Wallace).

The Lions remained in control with their balanced scoring attack in the second half. Freshman Jasmine Jones led LMU in scoring in the victory, finishing with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go along six rebounds. Alford notched her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds and also tallied two blocks in just 17 minutes. Buckingham finished with a season-high 10 points and seven boards. Senior Makenzie Cast scored nine points, freshman Chelsey Gipson chipped in seven points and six assists and junior Andee Velasco racked up eight points, six assists and five rebounds in the win.

“This was a great team win,” LMU head coach Charity Elliott said. “Everybody got a lot of minutes and a lot of good experience. It’s still not very pretty, but we did what we needed to do tonight. Now we’re going to celebrate and watch our men’s team play.”

Tonight’s game marked the first in a double-header with the LMU men’s basketball team, as the Lion men will battle Cal State Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m.

The Lion women next take the court when the team hosts USC this Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion. Both LMU and USC will enter the contest undefeated.
