March 11, 2004
Atlanta, Ga. - Loyola Marymount women's basketball Head Coach Julie Wilhoit has been named Russell Athletic/WBCA Regional Coach of the Year for Region 8, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced. Wilhoit earned the coaching honor after posting one of the top turnaround seasons in the nation and leading LMU women's basketball to its first NCAA tournament appearance.
Wilhoit, the Region 8 Coach of the Year, represents head coaches from the Pac-10, Big West, and West Coast Conferences. She, along with the other seven regional winners, now advances as a national finalist for the NCAA Division I Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year.
In their ninth season under Wilhoit, the Lions, now 24-5, will make the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They are currently on a record 15-game winning streak, after clinching LMU women's basketball's first WCC title thanks to a 13-1 run in conference play. Already ten games ahead of last year's record, Wilhoit and the Lions have put together a season that ranks in the top 10 in the nation in season turnarounds.
Wilhoit has earned West Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors three of the last five seasons, including the 2004 award. In her 16th season as a head coach, Wilhoit's record sits at 236-209 overall and 115-139 at LMU.
Coaches in each WBCA geographical region vote for their respective top coach for the regional award. The eight regional winners are automatically entered in the pool for the national recognition, which will be announced on Tuesday, April 6.
"I am honored and humbled by this regional recognition," Wilhoit said. "I have so much respect for all of the coaches in this region, so it is quite an honor for them to acknowledge our coaching staff and program in this way."
