Cierra Belvin Selected To Lingdao Fellows Program

April 16, 2018

LOS ANGELESCierra Belvin of the Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team was selected to participate in the Lingdao Fellows Program because of her role as an influential student leader. The fellows program is a global initiative which will help support LMU’s mission to create leaders who transform the world.

“The Lingdao Fellows Program is such an amazing organization to be a part of,” Belvin expressed. “I am honored to be one of the few selected and to represent the women’s basketball program through this exciting opportunity to explore China and its unique culture. Not only is the trip going to be eye-opening, but I also believe the program will help strengthen my leadership abilities while contributing to LMU’s international and global initiatives.”

The Lingdao Fellows Program is designed to engage Loyola Marymount’s student leaders in an immersive global experience, cultivate a respectful global worldview and develop an intercultural approach to leadership through two pre-excursion seminars, a week-long study tour in Beijing, China and enrollment in EDLA 498: Imagining Leadership as Global Citizens.

The week-long study tour at The Beijing Center will include lectures on ancient and modern China, China’s political system, Chinese culture and Chinese language classes as well as excursions to Beijing cultural and historical sites such as the Mutianyu Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Olympic Park. The opportunity will also provide social engagement opportunities and 1:1 language tutoring with Chinese student-leaders from the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE).

Belvin and the Lingdao Fellows will then take EDLA 498 in the fall to re-engage and reflect on their immersive global experience in Beijing and further cultivate a respectful global worldview while developing an intercultural approach to leadership informed by the social change model.

The program will be completed with the Lingdao Symposium which provides an opportunity for Belvin and the Lingdao Fellows to share their insights from their immersion experience, showcase their final projects and discuss ways to actively engage our international students in the life of the university.

“We are so proud of Cierra for being selected to the Lingdao Fellows Program,” Lions head coach Charity Elliott said. “She is a natural leader and for her to be recognized and chosen is such an honor for her and our program. We are very proud of her and can’t wait to hear about her experience in China."

Belvin is in her sophomore year at Loyola Marymount. She was honored by the West Coast Conference for her achievements both on and off the court this basketball season by earning WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention.
