Los Angeles, Calif., - Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003 - The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the West Coast Conference 2003-04 preseason poll, as selected by the coaches, which was released today by the conference office.
The Lions return the reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year in senior center Adrianne Slaughter and welcome back 2001-02 all-conference first-team member, senior wing Kate Murray. Murray was the Lions' leading scorer last season before suffering a season-ending ACL injury just five games into the season. Slaughter was selected as one of the conference's top five returners for the 03-04 season.
The Pepperdine Waves were selected as the preseason favorites while the Gonzaga Bulldogs received two first place votes and came in second. The San Francisco Lady Dons were picked fourth, following the Lions, with the Santa Clara Broncos checking in at fifth. Rounding out this year's poll is San Diego at sixth, Portland at seventh and Saint Mary's at eighth.
The Lions, looking for their third winning season in four years, open the regular season on the road at North Carolina State on November 21 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
