LOS ANGELES - LMU women's basketball first-year head coach Charity Elliott released her 13-game non-conference schedule for the 2012-13 slate Wednesday, which features six games in Gersten Pavilion and seven road contests, including a Thanksgiving trip to the Bahamas.
"We are very excited about our non-conference schedule," said Elliott. "We feel like it is challenging enough to prepare us for the rigorous WCC, while it will also provide some early team bonding with our trip to the Bahamas. The goal is always to be ready for conference play and I think this schedule will definitely do that. We are all just extremely excited and ready to get this new era of LMU women's basketball under way!"
The 13 non-conference opponents include three 2012 NCAA Tournament qualifiers, four Big West members, two Pac-12 members, two WAC members and two Mountain West members.
The Lions begin with a Nov. 3 exhibition game against The Master's at 2 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion. They then head to UTEP on Nov. 10, opening the season on the road for the ninth consecutive season. The Miners are the first of three opponents who qualified for the NCAA Tournament one year ago.
LMU concludes its season-opening trip at New Mexico State on Nov. 12, before returning to Gersten Pavilion to host Long Beach State on Nov. 15. The three-game homestand continues Nov. 17 versus Utah State and Nov. 20 versus Cal State Fullerton.
For the first time since 1996-97, the Lions will hit the road over the Thanksgiving break, trading in their home tournament for the Junkaroo Jam in the Bahamas. LMU will open play on Grand Bahama Island on Nov. 23 against 2012 NCAA Tournament qualifier Iowa State. They will face either Tulsa or Illinois the following day.
The Lions wrap up November by hosting Colorado State (Nov. 28), then make the short trip up the 405 to face UCLA in the newly renovated Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 2. Big West Tournament champion and NCAA qualifier UC Santa Barbara comes to Gersten Pavilion on Dec. 5, followed by a Dec. 15 match-up against Oregon State.
LMU closes out its non-conference slate and 2012 on the road, traveling to Big West regular-season champ Cal Poly on Dec. 20 and Wyoming on Dec. 29.
The WCC season begins the first week of January, with the Zappos.com WCC Championships returning to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, March 6-11.
