On Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, Lion supporters gathered together to support the women student-athletes at Loyola Marymount University. In its fourth year at Santa Anita Park, the annual Women in Athletics Day at the Races is now cementing itself as a key event for LMU Athletics as the department continues to grow and strive for success.

The day encompassed a buffet-style lunch, two speakers, a raffle, a great view of the races and paddock tours. Shaded in Club Court, the event lent itself for the perfect Sunday with friends, family and representatives from LMU. Numerous female student-athletes spoke to guests, took pictures and welcomed everyone to the track.

This year, we were honored to have Renata Simril ’93 attend and speak about her work with the LA84 Foundation and the 2028 Olympic Committee. She elaborated that the need for women equality extends beyond that of just equal pay, but also includes the necessity of providing strong women role models through coaching and bringing women’s powerful leaders to the forefront of history in commemorating their accomplishments. Taking these initiatives to heart, Renata and her colleagues pushed to have the 2nd and 3rd women recognized in the USC Coliseum Memorial Court of Honor, and through the LA84 Foundation, trained more than 80,000 additional coaches.

Following Renata was our very own Bianca Velasco ’19 from the LMU women’s basketball team. As a student-athlete, Bianca gave our supporters, administrators and her fellow student-athletes a complete and revealing look into strength that lies in each of our students. Utilizing basketball and falling back on the community of LMU, Bianca expressed how she was able to cope with a difficult family event. Her determination and grace through this trying point in her life is why we continue to support our student-athletes and provide them with the opportunity to compete, travel and succeed.

As we look to the next year, we look forward to building on this event and hope to see you there next year!
