LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team takes the court for the first time this season when they face Occidental Tuesday night, Nov. 6, in an exhibition matchup at 7 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion.

Returning to the team this season are redshirt freshman Brittney Reed, sophomores Cierra Belvin and Raychel Stanley, juniors Andee Velasco, Bianca Velasco and Cheyanne Wallace, redshirt juniors Bree Alford and NK Ilang and senior Makenzie Cast. Gabby Green, a 6-2 guard, is eligible to play her first season for LMU in 2017-18 after sitting last season due to transfer rules following her transfer from Cal. Josie Buckingham, a 6-5 center, will also join the Lions’ lineup this season after missing the 2016-17 campaign following her transfer from Minnesota. Green and Buckingham are both redshirt juniors this season.

The Lions welcomed three freshmen to the squad this season. Chelsey Gipson, a 5-7 guard from Palisades High School and two players from Long Beach Polytechnic High School: 5-9 guard Aiyana Barnes and 5-10 forward Jasmine Jones. Gipson (No. 53) and Jones (No. 91) were ranked by ESPNW as top recruits in the nation.

Meghan Mandel, a 6-4 forward/center, joined the team but will sit out the 2017-18 season after transferring to LMU from Marquette following her freshman year.

Point guard Andee Velasco led the WCC in assists last season, while guard/forward Cheyanne Wallace earned All-Conference honorable mention. Wallace was also named to the 2017-18 All-WCC Preseason Women’s Basketball Team, as voted by the conference’s 10 coaches.

Following Tuesday night’s exhibition game, the Lions open the 2017-18 regular season at UC Riverside on Friday, Nov. 10 and play two more road games at Saint Louis on Nov. 13 and Long Beach State on Nov. 17 before the team’s home opener at Gersten Pavilion on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. vs. the Arizona Wildcats.
