Lions Host 20th Annual LMU Thanksgiving Classic

LOS ANGELES – After a 4-0 start to the 2017-18 season, the Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will host its annual Thanksgiving Classic this coming Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24 and 25. This marks the 20th year of the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by LMU. The Lions hosted the tournament for 15 consecutive seasons from 1997-2011 before taking a break in 2012.

LMU will host Denver, Eastern Michigan and Miami in this year’s Thanksgiving Classic. Denver and Eastern Michigan will tip things off on Friday at 1 p.m. followed by a matchup between LMU and Miami at 3:30. Miami will face off against Denver at 1 p.m. on Saturday and LMU will battle Eastern Michigan at 3:30 to finish out the tournament.

The Lions are coming off of an 84-70 victory over the Arizona Wildcats on Tuesday night in the team’s first matchup in Gersten Pavilion on the season. Junior Cheyanne Wallace led all scorers in the win with a game-high 26 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. Wallace is averaging 18.3 points and 6.8 boards on the season and has scored 25+ points in back-to-back games (29 at LBSU on 11/17).

Redshirt junior Gabby Green is also averaging 18.3 points for LMU along with 6.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 4.0 steals per game. Redshirt junior Bree Alford leads the Lions in rebounds, averaging 11.5 per game to go along with 8.3 points. Senior Makenzie Cast has hit three three-pointers in three straight games and is averaging points so far in 2017-18.

So far on the season, Denver, Eastern Michigan and Miami are all 2-2. Eastern Michigan and Miami have each won both of their home contests and dropped both of their road contests. The Denver Pioneers are also 2-2 with a 2-1 record at home and 1-0 record on the road.

 

 

Following the Thanksgiving Classic, the Lions return to Gersten on Tuesday, Nov. 28 when they take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5 p.m. in a double-header with the LMU men’s basketball team. The Lion men will match up against Cal State Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m.
