Undefeated LMU and USC Square Off On Friday Night

LOS ANGELES – The undefeated LMU Lions (7-0) host the also unbeaten USC Trojans (7-0) this Friday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. Loyola Marymount has its best start since the 2003-04 season when the team won its first eight contests.

Junior Cheyanne Wallace leads the Lions in scoring on the season with 18.9 points per game to go along with 7.0 rebounds. Wallace was named the WCC Player of the Week on Nov. 27 after leading LMU to a 3-0 week and averaging 26.0 points and 8.3 rebounds over the three contests. She was also named the Most Valuable Player of the 2017 LMU Thanksgiving Classic last weekend.

LMU picked up its latest win on Tuesday night vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills, earning a 32-point victory (84-52) victory over the Toros at home. Freshman Jasmine Jones led the Lions in scoring on the night, tallying a career-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting with six boards. Redshirt junior Bree Alford notched her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds and also tallied two blocks in just 17 minutes. Redshirt junior Josie Buckingham finished with a season-high 10 points and seven boards. Senior Makenzie Cast scored nine points, freshman Chelsey Gipson chipped in seven points and six assists and junior Andee Velasco racked up eight points, six assists and five rebounds in the win.

The Lions rank among the WCC’s best in several categories so far in 2017-18. LMU is holding opponents to just 36.0 percent shooting from the field and 29.3 percent from three-point range. These mark the lowest opponent field goal and three-point percentages among all women’s teams in the WCC.

Gabby Green leads the conference in steals with an average of 3.2 per game. She also ranks fourth in blocks per game (1.7) and seventh in scoring (15.3 ppg). A. Velasco ranks third in assists per game (5.0) and in three-point percentage (.462). Alford ranks fourth in rebounds per game with 10.6 and Wallace is fourth in scoring with 18.9 points per game.

Kristen Simon is USC’s leading scorer, averaging 18.3 points per game on the season. She is one of four Trojans to average double-figure scoring, along with Sadie Edwards (15.4 ppg), Aliyah Mazyck (14.4 ppg) and Minyon Moore (13.0 ppg). Simon became the 26th Trojan to break the 1,000 career point barrier at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown last weekend.

So far in 2017-18, the Trojans have earned wins against Montana State, UC Riverside, Santa Clara, Long Beach State, Purdue, Marist and Hawai’i.

Following Friday night’s contest, the Lions travel to UC Santa Barbara for a Wednesday night matchup on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
