First-year head rowing coach Hanna Osborne completed the hiring of her coaching staff this week, announcing the appointment of Matthew Owyang, Ben Carr and Allison Kaufman as assistant coaches. Owyang and Kaufman will work alongside Osborne with the women's team, while Carr will aid the men's team.
Owyang arrives at LMU after serving as an Assistant Coach with the Oakland Strokes. While there, Owyang primarily coached the Men's Second and Third Novice 8+s, and the Men's Novice 4+. His crews medaled at the 2016 and 2017 USRowing Southwest Youth Championships. He also served as Head Coach of the Oakland Strokes 2017 Women's Varsity Summer Camp. Prior to the Oakland Strokes, Owyang served as the Assistant Women's Coach at Drexel University, where he worked with the Junior Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+. At Yale University, Owyang led the Men's Second Freshmen 8+ to a third-place finish at Eastern Sprints.
"Matt has a variety of skills that make him an all-around highly qualified coach," said head coach Hanna Osborne. "His experience with recruiting is a great asset. He has worked with athletes both at the high school and college level, from assisting high school athletes through the recruiting process to identifying prospective collegiate student-athletes. He has also served as a boatman and has extensive knowledge on boat maintenance and repairs."
Owyang received his degree in International Studies from Trinity College in 2007, where he was a four-year coxswain. He won four New England Rowing Championships, two ECAC National Invitational Championships, and the Head of the Charles in the Collegiate Eight. He was also a coxswain for the Bantam Boat Club, where he placed third in the Men's 8+ at the USRowing Elite National Championships and was a Quarterfinalist in the Ladies' Challenge Plate at the Henley Royal Regatta.
Kaufman received her B.A. in English from Holy Cross and an M.F.A. in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Serving as head rowing coach at Pomfret School in Connecticut from 2008 to 2011, she led her squad to an eight-place finish in the 2010 New England Private School Championship. Under her guidance, Kaufman saw four of her rowers go on to compete for Division I schools, including one who was recruited for the U.S. under-23 team.
"When I first met Allison, her passion for the development of athletes was infectious." Osborne said. "I immediately felt Allison would be a great leader for our walk-on athletes having been a walk-on athlete herself, and because she brings about an understanding and enthusiasm to establish an environment for the growth of our newest athletes in our program."
Since college, Kaufman has also demonstrated leadership in the classroom while teaching at the high school and junior college levels in Connecticut, Colorado, and California.
Carr received a business degree in marketing and management from Emory University, and later became a Fellow of Applied Functional Science with the Gray Institute. Carr coached the University of Virginia men's rowing program for three years. He then moved into the physical therapy and behavioral coaching field, and later returned to rowing as the Director of Summer Programs for the Penn AC Rowing Association. He has worked with athletes who have become collegiate national champions, Henley Royal Regatta winners, and FISA World Championship medalists.
"I had the privilege of working with Ben during the 2016 summer at Penn AC, and am completely thrilled he has joined our coaching staff," said Osborne. "He brings with him a wealth of knowledge not just within our sport, but to build a team culture that will benefit not only our men's team, but will undoubtedly be valuable to the entire LMU Rowing program."
LMU is coming off a season in which it finished third overall at the 2017 WCC Championships.
