LOS ANGELES - Freshman Madison Heilmann's 40-yard blast in the 94th minute of play broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the LMU women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over visiting Cal State Fullerton Sunday at Sullivan Field.
The Lions improve to 1-1-0 on the young season while first-year head coach Michelle Myers picked up her first career victory. The Titans fell to 0-2-0.
Heilmann, who played all 94 minutes Sunday, won a 50-50 ball from a Titan player on the left wing. She touched it slightly upfield, then launched a right-footed shot that floated into the upper far-post netting, out of the reach of Titan keeper Katie Pulliam for the golden goal winner at the 93:54 mark.
Cal State Fullerton owned a 1-0 lead at the half after Christina Burkenroad scored in the 41st minute, finishing a ball from eight yards out. Erica Mazeau and Nikki Mccants earned assists on the goal.
LMU, which held a 13-8 shot advantage in the game, heightened its attack in the second half and finally broke through with the equalizer at the 61:22 mark. Earning a free kick just outside the box on the right wing, Brianne Medved sent the ball straight at the near post and into the net.
The Lions continue their non-conference slate of Big West opponents on Friday, Aug. 24, traveling to face UC Irvine in a 6 p.m. start. LMU returns to Sullivan Field on Sunday, Aug. 26 to host Houston Baptist.
