Hanks' hat trick downs Lions
Aug. 29, 2008
South Bend, IN - Facing its first road trip and ranked opponent of the season, LMU ran into trouble at #4 Notre Dame Friday night, falling 4-0 to the Fighting Irish in front of 1363 fans at Alumni Field in the Inn at Saint Mary's Classic. The Lions were undone by Kerri Hanks, who showed why she is one of the nation's premier players by registering a hat-trick.
After making the long trip to South Bend, LMU (0-1-1) was looking for a bright start to the game but Hanks put an end to that with her first goal just two minutes in. The three-time All-America took advantage of an LMU foul in the penalty area to beat LMU junior Allyssa Clark from the spot. Less than 10 minutes later, Hanks doubled the Irish (2-0-0) advantage, again on a penalty kick.
LMU settled down after its auspicious start with sophomore Lily Sorentino forcing Kelsey Lysander into the first save of the match. Sophomore Julie Gallaudet and Sorentino each followed with shot attempts, only to see them sail off target.
Notre Dame made it 3-0 in the 66th minute when Elise Weber's shot came back off the crossbar to Melissa Henderson, who tapped in. Hanks wrapped up her hat-trick in the final minute of play, beating the Lion defense through the middle and sending her shot into the top corner from 22 yards out.
Notre Dame held a 23-4 shot advantage, with Sorentino registering half of LMU's attempts. In goal, Clark made the start, logging 76 minutes and making six saves. Junior Katie Graul finished up the final 14 minutes and was forced into action for one save. In the Irish goal, Lysander stopped two shots.
LMU stays in South Bend to face #12 West Virginia on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. Pacific.
