LOS ANGELES - The LMU women's soccer team saved its best for last Sunday. After 109 minutes of few quality chances for either the Lions or the visiting UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, Jenni Benger made the final chance for either side a memorable one.
With just 32 seconds remaining in the second 10-minute overtime period at Sullivan Field, Benger used her head to redirect Jocelyn Blankenship's high arcing corner kick from the right side, popping it just past the reach of UCSB keeper Makenna Henry and into the back of the net. The 1-0 final was the third straight win for the Lions who move to 3-1-0 on the season. UCSB fell to 1-2-1.
LMU held a slight 13-11 shot advantage over the Gauchos for the balance of the game, but despite four saves by Henry and five by LMU keeper Brittany Jagger, both team's struggled to find quality opportunities in the final third of the field.
The shutout was Jagger's second of the season and 23rd of her career. She now sits five shutouts shy of the No. 2 position in the LMU record book.
A big test awaits the Lions over the next two weeks as they begin a four-game road swing on Friday, Sept. 6, traveling to face Stanford in Palo Alto. Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
