Los Angeles, CA - The LMU women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over the visiting Oregon Ducks this afternoon at Sullivan Field. Jamie Bell gave the Lions an early lead in the 16th minute and Tana Smothermon scored what was eventually the game-winner early in the second half. The Lions improve to 1-0-1 on the season while Oregon drops to 0-3. LMU will host UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday afternoon at 5:00pm.

Oregon attacked quickly, with a dangerous opportunity in the opening minutes. Nicole Garbin got behind the Lion defense and had a one-on-one opportunity with LMU goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek. The 6-0 junior stopped the close range shot to give the Lions an early boost.

Bell put the Lions on the scoreboard at 15:46. She got the ball from Katie Osborne and dribbled along the top of the box. After getting past a few Duck defenders, she let loose with a hard low shot that got past Oregon goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield to put the Lions on the board.

The first half remained 1-0, although the shots were fairly even. LMU outshot Oregon 8-6, including six shots on goal to Oregon's three. Slovek made three first-half saves, and Chatfield made five.

Early in the second half, LMU added to its lead. Michelle Kanama launched a high cross in front of the goal. Stefanie Baduria flicked it back to a waiting Smothermon, who blasted a header to the near post to put LMU ahead 2-0.

However, the Ducks battled back to make it a one goal game in the 66th minute. Off of a corner kick by Danielle Sweeney, Dylann Tharp flicked the ball to Allison Newton near the back of the net who got off a shot to the near post from close range. Slovek tried to get a hand on it, but was just short.

LMU remained strong and held onto the lead for the victory. Bell and Smothermon led LMU with three shots each, and Slovek finished the day with five saves. Garvin led Oregon with five shots, and Chatfield made six saves in goal for the Ducks.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday afternoon, hosting UC Santa Barbara at Sullivan Field at 5:00pm. Gametracker will be available for the game at www.LMULions.com.
