Lewis Nets Golden Goal in 2OT
Melissa Lewis found the back of the net with seven seconds remaining in double overtime.
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Melissa Lewis tapped in a cross from Sarah Sanger with just seven seconds remaining in double overtime, lifting the LMU women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Toledo Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
The win was the third straight for the Lions, who move to 3-2-0 overall. Toledo fell to 1-5-0 on the season.
The teams played fairly evenly through the first half of play, neither able to generate many quality chances, and LMU took a slight 5-3 shot advantage into the locker room.
LMU picked up the pace early in the second half as freshman Sarina Bolden took a pair of quality shots, the second forcing a diving save by Rockets' goalkeeper Sam Tiongson. The Lions continued to pepper the Toledo goal as Bolden, Jocelyn Blankenship and Lewis combined for seven shots and forced three Tiongson saves.
Blankenship and Ally Andreini each sent shots wide in the first overtime period and as time wound down in the second 10-minute overtime period, it seemed as if the teams were headed for a scoreless draw.
But the Lions and one last push when Sarah Sanger found herself on the right wing with the ball. She pushed it put he field and sent a low cross across the goalmouth. Lewis made her run to the back post and tapped the ball past Tiongson for the golden goal winner.
The Lions finished with a 17-12 shot advantage over the Rockets, including five shots on frame. Charles Pruitt, who played the second half and both overtime periods in goal for LMU, picked up her first collegiate win. The redshirt freshman made four saves on the day.
LMU is back on the pitch Friday, Sept. 11, continuing its five-game homestand versus Long Beach State. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
