Martino, McGovern Lead Lions Past Bengals
The LMU women's soccer team earned its second shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Idaho State Sunday.
LOS ANGELES - Tawni Martino and Cori McGovern each found the back of the net for the second time this season and the LMU women's soccer team improved to 5-2-1 on the season with a 2-0 shutout of Idaho State Sunday at Sullivan Field.
Riding the high of their 1-1 tie against No. 1 UCLA Friday night, Martino put the Lions on top just 1:28 into the match. Brianne Medved sent a ball up the middle of the field towards a streaking Martino. The Bengals' keeper Maria Dela Cruz came out to the edge of the 18-yard box to make a play on the ball, but lost the 50-50 battle with Martino, who was then able to slot the ball into an empty net.
McGovern added the insurance goal in the 57th minute off an assist from Whitney Sharpe. Sharpe worked the ball up the right flank to the endline, sending a perfect cross to the front of the goalmouth where McGovern headed it into the net.
In goal Brittany Jagger made five saves for the Lions, picking up her fifth win, and second shutout, of the season.
The Lions travel to Tucson, Ariz., next week, facing Arizona State and host Arizona in the Arizona Cat Classic.
