LMU nets season-high four goals in 4-1 win over Oral Roberts
Sept. 21, 2008
Stillwater, OK - Sophomore Julie Gallaudet had two goals and an assist as LMU moved its record back over .500 with a convincing 4-1 victory over Oral Roberts Sunday afternoon in Stillwater, OK. The Lions (4-3-2) rebounded from back-to-back shutouts to post a season-high four goals against the Golden Eagles (3-4-1).
LMU entered the game having failed to find the net in the previous 258 minutes but those offensive fears were put to rest with an emphatic offensive display. The Lions out-shot the Golden Eagles 12-4 and used three unanswered goals to put away a contest that had been close in the opening 20 minutes.
Senior Lauren Shanklin got the ball rolling for the Lions with her team-leading fourth goal, just 9:54 into the match. Gallaudet provided the assist for Shanklin, who also topped her career-high with her fourth tally of the season.
Oral Roberts drew level at 20:52 through Correne Walker but after that it was all LMU. Junior Lacey Bartels put the Lions back in front 113 seconds from halftime off a feed by sophomore Lily Sorentino. The goal was the second of the season for Bartels while Sorentino provided her team-leading fourth assist of the year and tenth of her career.
The Lions maintained their 2-1 advantage for much of the second half until two quick strikes from Gallaudet put the game away. The first came at 73:12 as the sophomore took a pass from junior Kristen Garcia and found the net for the second time this season. Just 71 seconds later, she did it herself to make it 4-1 and notch the Lions' first two-goal output from a player this season.
LMU's defense was outstanding in holding Oral Roberts to just four shots. Junior Allyssa Clark was called into action to make one save. Amanda Wheeler and Mikella Schexnider split time in goal for ORU, each making two saves.
The Lions return to Los Angeles to complete their three-game road trip next Friday at defending national champions USC.
