Sept. 30, 2012
LOS ANGELES - Tawni Martino struck for a pair of goals and Jocelyn Blankenship added a third as the LMU women's soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 3-2 win over visiting Utah Valley Sunday at Sullivan Field.
The Lions improve to 6-3-2 overall while the Wolverines drop to 1-10-1 on the year.
After going scoreless in back-to-back games two weeks ago at in Arizona, LMU was on a mission to score early and often. Blankenship put the Lions on the board just 3:30 into the match with her second goal of the season. The freshman sent a corner kick from the right side into play, but with no shot opportunity, Martino knocked it back out to Blankenship who then sent a long shot from the top right corner of the box into the near post netting.
Martino made it 2-0 LMU in the 12th minute, receiving a through ball in the box from Darien Pyka and then beating UVU goalkeeper Lauren Sack with a low shot into the left corner of the goal.
Early in the second half, Martino notched her fourth goal of the season. The junior made a run up the left side of the box to collect a pass from Cassidy Nicks, then launched a shot to the far post which slipped through the outstretched hands of Sack, making it 3-0 at 55:42.
The Wolverines would make things interesting, however, as Regan Benson scored her fifth goal of the season off a free kick set in the 60th minute. McKell Salmon then cut LMU's lead to just a single goal when she followed a blocked save by Brittany Jagger and sent it back into the net in the 84th minute.
The Lions held on over the final six minutes of play, finishing their non-conference schedule with six wins for the fourth consecutive season.
West Coast Conference play begins next week for the Lions as they host San Diego on Sunday, Oct. 7. Kick off is scheduled for noon at Sullivan Field. The match will also be LMU's Breast Cancer Awareness "Pink" game and all those in attendance will receive a free pink WCC headband.
