Sims Breaks LMU Points Record at Saint Mary's
Oct. 21, 2005
MORAGA, Calif. - Senior forward Lori Sims became the LMU career points leader against Saint Mary's today, scoring a goal in the second half to give her 52 career points. But Saint Mary's tied the game shortly after the Lions took the lead, and a Saint Mary's penalty kick would be the deciding goal as the Gaels emerged with a 2-1 win in WCC action this afternoon in Moraga, Calif.
With the game tied at 1-1, an LMU defender took down SMC forward Katie Frattone in the penalty box, and the Gaels were awarded a penalty kick. Stephanie Harrison took the free kick and she converted. LMU goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek dove right and Harrison's shot went left into the back of the net for the game winner at the 67:48 mark.
Saint Mary's and Loyola Marymount played a scoreless first half that saw both teams take five shots.
The Lions took just one shot in the second half, but Sims made it count as she scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute to give LMU a 1-0 advantage. Sims found open space in the Gaels' defense and lofted a shot from 25 yards out over the diving SMC goalkeeper Alicia Artuso at the 56:29 minute mark.
Saint Mary's answered with the equalizer just over three minutes later. Stefani Rocco took a pass on the right sideline from Sarah Churchill and made a cross to the center where Nikki Schrey was lurking. Schrey got her head on the ball and redirected it past Slovek a the 59:53 minute mark.
For her LMU career, Sims has scored 19 goals with 14 assists for a total of 52 points. She passes Heather Farr's mark of 51 points, set in 1993-97. With 19 career goals, Sims is just one score away from tying Farr's all-time record of 20.
Saint Mary's took 10 shots, with six on goal, while the Lions took six shots with two on goal. Artuso had one save to record the victory, while Slovek recorded four saves in the loss.
The Lions will wrap up their road trip at San Francisco on Sunday at 1:00pm.
