LOS ANGELES - The final piece in the LMU women's soccer 2013 freshman class has a last name Lions fans are already familiar with. Nikki Martino, younger sister of senior Tawni Martino, will join the Lions in the fall and hopefully the sister partnership can replicate their high school success at the collegiate level.
In their only season playing high school soccer together, Nikki and Tawni's Beckman High School team reached the 2010 CIF and State finals with the Martinos as two of the team's leading scorers. Nikki was second team All-Pacific League as a freshman, first team all-league as a junior and her team's offensive MVP in her final three prep seasons. She was also the team's leading scorer during those three years.
"Nikki might share the same last name as Tawni but they have very different personalities and styles both on and off the field," said LMU Head Coach Michelle Myers. "They complement each other well. Nikki likes to take on defenders 1v1 on the flanks and get in behind defenses. She has great pace, technical ability and strength. We are excited to have Nikki join our offense this fall and make a name for herself."
Nikki Martino's club teams, the Breakaway and the So Cal Blues, were two of the most successful in the country, winning numerous National Cup Championships, Regional Championships and Surf Cup Championships. The So Cal Blues is currently the top ranked team in Southern California and the #3 ranked team in the country. Martino has also competed on the Cal South ODP and the Region IV Regional team. She was also a member of the U15 National Team Pool.
Off the field, Martino is also a Scholar-Athlete and a four-year member of Beckman High School's honor roll.
