LOS ANGELES - In a vote of the league's nine head coaches, the LMU women's soccer team was picked to finish seventh in the 2012 West Coast Conference Preseason Poll, released Tuesday.
Santa Clara earned 63 points and seven first-place votes to lead the voting, followed by 2011 co-champion Pepperdine, which was picked second with 52 points and one first place vote. The league's other 2011 co-champ, San Diego, was picked to finish third (48 points).
BYU was selected fourth with 45 points, followed by Portland in fifth with 42 points and one first-place vote. Saint Mary's (6th, 26 points), LMU (7th, 21 points), San Francisco (8th, 17 points) and Gonzaga (9th, 10 points) rounded out the preseason poll.
The Lions went 7-10-3 overall and 1-6-1 in WCC play in 2011, good for a tie for seventh place in a league that sent four teams to the NCAA Tournament. The 2012 squad, under the direction of first-year head coach Michelle Myers, features 17 returning letterwinners (including eight starters), two redshirts and 10 newcomers. Leading the returning core are 2011 All-WCC selections Tawni Martino (Jr., F, 4 g, 2 a) and Etajha Gilmer (Jr., D, 2 g, 1 a). Also back is redshirt junior goalkeeper Brittany Jagger who posted six shutouts and a 1.25 GAA in 2011.
LMU opens the 2012 season on Saturday, Aug. 11, hosting an exhibition match against Cal State Northridge. The Lions' regular-season slate begins Friday, Aug. 17 when they host Cal Poly. Both matches kick off at 4 p.m. on Sullivan Field.
