INSIDE THE LIONS
The Lions will take a preview look at their 2012 side today before the official season opener on Aug. 17 against Cal Poly. LMU returns 17 letterwinners, including eight starters from its 2011 team that went 7-10-3 overall and 1-6-1 in WCC play. Leading the returning core are junior forward Tawni Martino, a 2011 All-WCC selection who paced the team with four goals and two assists, and junior defender Etajha Gilmer, a 2011 All-WCC selection who had a pair of goals and helped the Lion defense to posting six shutouts. Also back is junior goalkeeper Brittany Jagger, who recorded six shutouts and a 1.25 GAA in 2011. Joining the returning core are 10 newcomers and two redshirts.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
The Lions and Matadors have met 12 times in regular-season play, with LMU holding a 9-3-0 edge in the series. The Lions won the first seven consecutive meetings, but Cal State Northridge has held the edge as of late, claiming the last two meetings - including a 3-0 win at LMU last season. Today's exhibition match will not officially be added to the all-time record between the two squads.

THE MATADORS
Cal State Northridge went 7-10-2 overall and 4-3-1 in Big West play last fall. The Matadors have been picked to finish fourth in the 2012 Big West Preseason Poll. The side also had two players selected to the All-Big West Preseason Team - senior goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo and senior defender Katie Russ.
