Lions Seek Season's First Win Streak

LOS ANGELES - Coming off a golden-goal victory over Cal State Fullerton Sunday, the LMU women's soccer team will look to make it two, and possibly three, in a row as non-conference action continues this week. On Friday, Aug. 24 the Lions travel to face UC Irvine at 6 p.m., then return to Sullivan Field on Sunday, Aug. 26 for a noon kick-off against Houston Baptist.

LIONS' LAST LINE
In its season-opener against Cal Poly, LMU struck first with a goal by Cori McGovern midway through the first half, but the Mustangs responded with three second-half strikes and the Lions fell 3-1 in their first game of 2012. Back on Sullivan Field two days later, it was visiting Cal State Fullerton who would strike first, taking a 1-0 lead into the break. But a second-half goal by sophomore Brianne Medved, followed by the overtime game-winner by freshman Madison Heilmann, game the Lions the 2-1 victory.

 

 

INSIDE THE LIONS
Freshman Madison Heilmann leads the Lions with three points after tallying an against Cal Poly and scoring the game-winner against Cal State Fullerton... Sophomore Brianne Medved and senior Cori McGovern also have one goal apiece... The Lions have started the same 11 players both games thus far, including a pair of freshmen in Heilmann and Jocelyn Blankenship... The win over Cal State Fullerton was the first career victory for head coach Michelle Myers who takes the reigns of the program after serving as an assistant for the past 15 seasons... The golden-goal victory against the Titans moves the Lions to 21-20-42 all-time in overtime games... In a preseason poll, the Lions were picked to finish seventh in the highly competitive WCC.

HEAD-TO-HEAD VS. THE ANTEATERS
The Lions are 3-4-3 all-time against UC Irvine. LMU has faired better both at home, going 2-1-2 at Sullivan Field, and in recent meetings, winning three of the last four... The teams have not met since the 2008 season when LMU claimed a 3-1 win at Sullivan Field... Three of the 10 all-time meetings have gone into overtime - all three resulting in a draw... The Lions' lone victory at Anteater Stadium was a 2-1 final in 2001.

THE UC IRVINE ANTEATERS
UC Irvine will be seeking its first win of 2012 on Friday against LMU after dropping games to BYU, 3-2 in overtime, and Texas A&M, 2-1, last week... Thus far, a trio of Anteaters have supplied one goal apiece - Rachel Wood, Zuri Walker and Jordan Utvich - while Zoya Farzaneh has a pair of assists... In goal Jennifer Randazzo has played all 188 minutes, making six saves... The Anteaters were picked to finish second behind Long Beach State in the Big West Conference Preseason Poll... Natalia Ledezma and Cami Privett were named to the Big West Preaseason All-Conference Team...

HEAD-TO-HEAD VS. THE HUSKIES
Sunday's match between the Lions and Huskies of Houston Baptist will be the first program history.

THE HOUSTON BAPTIST HUSKIES
The Huskies enter the week with a 1-1-0 overall record and will face UC Riverside on Friday before traveling to LMU on Sunday... HBU opened the season with a 1-0 win over USTA, then fell to Houston, 3-2... Molly Missimer, Natalie Hager and Taylor Gibson have each scored for the Huskies... three different players have also each tallied one assist... Shelby Horn was on goal for the 1-0 shutout, posting seven saves... Lara Johnson saw 90-minutes of action against Houston, making three saves...

COMING UP NEXT
The Lions travel to Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Aug. 31 for a 7 p.m. kick off, then return home to Sullivan Field on Sunday Sept. 2 to host Wisconsin at noon.
