Julie Gallaudet Named WCC Player of the Week
Junior has goal, assist in Sunday win; Lions move up to #4 regionally
Sept. 28, 2009
San Bruno, Calif. - Junior Julie Gallaudet has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for September 21-27 after leading LMU to a pair of victories last week, the conference office announced Monday. Gallaudet is the first LMU women's soccer player to earn the award this season and this is her first player of the week award. In addition, LMU vaulted up the regional rankings to fourth.
Gallaudet played a part in three of LMU's four goals on the week as the Lions posted a 2-0 record with a pair of shutouts. On Friday against Long Beach State, it was Gallaudet who was fouled just outside the penalty area, leading to Kelsey Wilson's free-kick goal in a 1-0 Lion win. Gallaudet played a more active role in Sunday's 3-0 defeat of Cal State Bakersfield, scoring once and assisting on another. She opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the contest with her second goal of the season. Later, she helped cap three LMU goals in the opening 25 minutes by serving a cross for Kelley Lawson's header.
Gallaudet is tied for the team lead with 10 points while pacing the Lions with six assists, which also leads the conference. Her six assists this year ties her for fifth on the LMU single-season list while she also moved into a tie for eighth on the career assist list with 10. She is the first LMU player to be named WCC Player of the Week since Katie Osborne won the award on October 8, 2007.
Thanks in part to its four-match unbeaten run, LMU has also moved up in the NSCAA/adidas West Regional Rankings. The Lions, who extended their streak of consecutive weeks in the regional rankings to 26, climbed from sixth to fourth. LMU is a perfect 5-0-0 at home and has yet to concede a goal at Sullivan Field.
LMU takes it slow over the next two weeks, playing only two games between now and October 16. Next week, LMU travels to Arizona on Friday at 7 p.m. for the non-conference finale. The Lions then open WCC play on Sunday, October 11 at Pepperdine.
