ST. GEORGE, Utah - Red Desert Classic play continued Friday for the LMU softball team, which earned a 6-0 shutout of Weber State in the morning before dropping a 9-3 decision to Utah in the nightcap.
Molly Medeiros picked up her first win of the year in the Lions' opening game against Weber State, fanning three and allowing just two hits in 4.1 innings of work. Sydney Gouveia tossed the final 2.2 innings, striking out three.
Danielle Smith led off the bottom of the first with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give LMU an early 1-0 lead over the Wildcats.
The Lions then broke things open in the home half of the third, plating four runs on four hits. Stephanie Crist had an RBI triple down the right field line and Skylar Segura followed with a two-out, three RBI triple, giving LMU a 5-0 advantage.
Olivia Alvarez added an RBI single up the middle in the sixth for the game's final spread.
LMU finished with nine hits in the game, including two each by Smith and Alvarez.
Dana Waldusky took the loss against the Utes, surrendering five runs on seven hits through four innings of work.
The Lions looked strong early, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a Crist RBI double and an Alvarez two RBI single. But Utah responded with one run in the first, three in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth while keeping LMU off the board for the balance of the game.
Stephanie Maciel collected a pair of hits, but the Lions managed just six total against Utah ace Naomi Amu.
The Lions move to 2-1 on the young season and will conclude tournament play Saturday with games against Utah State at 10 a.m. and Arkansas at 12:30 p.m.
