Davis, Calif. -- The Lions have started their 2012 season with a bang. LMU concluded its opening weekend tournament at UC Davis with four consecutive wins under their belt. Junior right handed pitcher Molly Medeiros also collects her first four wins of the season. The Lions closed out their road trip with a 4-0 win over Nevada today in Davis.
Defense was the key for the Lions today. Senior Kelly Sarginson had 13 put outs along the first base line. Medeiros earned her first shut out of the season, holding Nevada to four hits. She didn’t toss a single walk and struck out one.
Similar to the previous games, LMU’s bats didn’t get hot until the fifth and sixth innings. With no score in the bottom of the fifth inning freshmen Shavaugn Sierras, in her first at bat of her collegiate career, hit an RBI single to right field, bringing Skyler Segura home and putting the Lions on the board.
In the bottom of the sixth, the bottom half of the order shined once again. With Fischer on base, sophomore Samantha Nelson singled to left field bringing Fischer home. Junior Skyler Segura followed the trend with a single to left field. With runners on fist and third, senior Brittany Pereda cracks a 2 RBI double bringing Nelson and Segura home.
The Lions have proved this weekend that the bottom of their batting order is just as dangerous as the top half.
LMU returns for their home opener at Smith Field on Tuesday, February 14 at 12:00pm against UCLA.
