POWAY, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount softball team was shut out by San Diego State, 5-0, on Friday night in its first game of the 13th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at the Sportsplex. Freshman Samantha Lavino picked up the loss for the Lions.

SDSU scored two runs in the fourth inning, as junior center fielder Janna Kovensky reached first base on a fielder's choice and then stole second. Kovensky would later score on a Lion error before junior catcher Jacque Vaca drove Murphy home. San Diego State added some insurance runs in the fifth as freshman shortstop Bianca Cruz scored, Kovensky's single to right brought sophomore outfielder Erin Mahoney home and Kovensky crossed homeplate with two away in the inning.

The Lions managed just four hits in the game. 3B Danielle Kaminaka was 2-for-3 on the night. Sami Strinz and Emily Foltz each collected a hit for LMU.

Loyola Marymount faces Central Florida and New Mexico tomorrow in the second day of action at the tournament. LMU will also play two games on Sunday, matching up against Michigan and Sacramento State.
