PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Despite taking an early 3-0 lead on Sunday evening, the Loyola Marymount softball team (2-5-1) was overtaken by undefeated Arkansas (4-0) with a final score of 6-5.
The Lions had a strong second inning, scoring three runs and going up 3-0. Alicia Brown was the first to score on an RBI single up the middle by Molly Grumbo. Sabrina Tebou secured the other two runs for LMU in the inning as she homered to right center field, driving Grumbo home on the play.
The third inning was scoreless, but each team scored two runs apiece in the fourth. Andrea Gonzalez scored the first run on an error by the right-fielder and Lindsey Matoi singled to left field, earning the RBI as Grumbo came home and the score stood at 5-2 with LMU in the lead heading into the fifth inning.
Arkansas scored two more runs in the fifth to trim LMU’s lead, making it 5-4, and they went on to score one run in the sixth and one in the seventh to secure the 6-5 comeback victory over the Lions.
The Lions wrap up play in the Mary Nutter Invitational tomorrow, as they face Utah at 9 a.m. and UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m.
