WESTWOOD, Calif. - The LMU softball team took a 2-0 lead over No. 15 UCLA after two innings, but the Bruins were able to take advantage of walks and errors to come from behind for a 5-2 victory at Easton Stadium this afternoon. The Lions outhit UCLA, 8-5, led by Kirsten Slouber, who was 2-for-4 and scored both runs for LMU.
Things started really well for LMU (12-8), as the Lions got hits from three of their first four batters to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Christine Foley earned a walk to bring home the first run of the game.
Pagano was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning, striking out Whitney Holum to keep the Lions ahead, 1-0.
LMU added another run in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Slouber singled and stole second base. She came home on an RBI single by Tiffany Gonzales to give the Lions the 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless and hitless bottom of the second, the Bruins (11-5) were finally able to capitalize on walks in the third. Two walks and a single loaded the bases, and Megan Langenfeld tied things up with a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield. After a strikeout, Julia Burney hit an infield single to score the eventual game-winning run to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead after three.
UCLA added to the lead in the fifth inning. A walk and two LMU errors allowed the Bruins to tack on another two unearned runs to extend their lead to 5-2.
Anjelica Selden didn't allow a hit the rest of the way to record the victory in the circle. She struck out 11 and allowed two runs on eight hits with one walk. Tiffany Pagano took the loss for the Lions, allowing three earned runs on four hits in 4.2 innings of work. She walked seven and struck out four. Melissa Dykema was strong in relief, allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings to finish up the game.
Slouber and Margo Pineda led the Lions with two hits each. Foley and Gonzales each had RBI for LMU.
LMU returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts UC Riverside in a doubleheader at Smith Field starting at 1:00pm.
