LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount softball team (9-10-1) swept the Boston University Terriers (7-8) by picking up two wins in their doubleheader on Tuesday. The Lions earned a 4-2 victory in Game 1 which was followed by a 4-3 win in Game 2.
The first three innings of Game 1 were scoreless before Delanie Wisz was driven home on a single up the middle by Megan Martin. This was followed up by a double to left center by Sabrina Tebou which allowed Martin to score, making it 2-0 with the Lions in the lead. Wisz went on the homer in the fifth, bringing home Matoi to push LMU’s lead to 4-0.
Boston University was able to score two runs in the top of the seventh, but the game ended there with a final score of 4-2.
Hannah Bandimere earned the win on the mound for the Lions, finishing with three strikeouts, three hits and two runs in the complete game. With the win, she moved to 6-3 on the season.
LMU also got on the board first in Game 2 as Molly Grumbo doubled to left center, scoring Maddison Flores and Tebou on the play. The Terriers scored one run in the top of the third on a Heinen double to center field, scoring Younan. The Lions added two more runs in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1. Wisz scored on an error by BU’s catcher and then Andrea Gonzalez scored on a double down the left field line by Tebou.
The Terriers scored one run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, but LMU held strong to earn the victory.
Today began a 14-game homestand for LMU, with the two-week LMU Tournament following today’s games on Thursday, March 8 with contests against Providence and Florida Gulf Coast. In between the two weekends of the tournament, LMU will face Ohio State on Tuesday, March 13, and then Columbia and Monmouth on Wednesday, March 14 at Smith Field. The Lions will play North Dakota State to start off the second weekend of the LMU Tournament.
