Two Come-From-Behind Wins in Florida
The LMU softball team opened play at the USF Under Armour Showcase with a pair of come-from-behind wins, topping Penn State 4-2 early in the day before earning a 9-4 win over Long Island Friday.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The LMU softball team opened play at the USF Under Armour Showcase with a pair of come-from-behind wins, topping Penn State 4-2 early in the day before earning a 9-4 win over Long Island Friday.
The Lions (9-10) battled from a 2-0 deficit in the opener against the Nittany Lions, scoring runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
An Olivia Alavarez leadoff homer to open the fourth cut the deficit in half. Pinch runner Jordan Price added an unearned run in the fifth knotting the score at 2-2.
LMU then broke things open in the sixth as Danielle Smith led off with a single. Skylar Segura reached on a bunt single and the pair advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Meghan Harman drew a walk to load the bases and Stephanie Crist delivered an RBI single up the middle for the go-ahead run.
Two batters later Stephanie Maciel drew an RBI-walk for the final run of the game.
LMU pitcher Sydney Gouveia then recorded three straight outs in the Penn State top of the seventh for her second win of the season. The rookie went the complete seven innings, fanning nine and scattering six hits.
The Lions had just four hits in the game as Penn State starter Marissa Diescher issued eight walks in five innings of work.
Against the Blackbirds, LMU again battled back from a 2-0 deficit, this time piling on three runs in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth and four in the sixth.
Leading just 5-4 headed into the bottom of the sixth, Segura and Alvarez each launched a two-run home run to break the game open.
Segura finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the game while Harman had a pair of hits. Dana Waldusky went five innings to earn the win for LMU while Gouveia closed out the final two innings.
The Lions continue tournament play Saturday, facing Central Michigan at 11:30 a.m. PT and Tennessee-Chattanooga at 4 p.m. PT.
